Clinical Staff

Patients suspected to suffer from complex or rare and inherited iron disorder are referred to pediatricians, internists, internist-hematologists or clinical geneticists of the Radboudumc Center for Iron Disorders by medical specialists from other Centers in the Netherlands or abroad or more rarely by General Practioners.

In our Center: i) adult patients with a diagnosis or suspicion of an anemia due to an iron disorder are referred to our internist hematologists, ii) adult patients with diagnosis or suspicion of inherited forms of iron overload are referred to the internists, and  iii) pediatric patients with a diagnosis or suspicion of an anemia due to an iron disorder, or suspicion of inherited forms of iron overload are referred to our pediatric hematologists.

The suspicion that a patient suffers from an iron disorder is mostly based on clinical presentation/course, results of laboratory screening studies in body-fluids, and less often liver biopsy, MRI, bone marrow investigations or family history. In most cases more common disorders are excluded before referral to our Center.
